The Standing Committee on National Defence met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Rick Casson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Robert Bouchard, Blaine Calkins, John Cannis, Rick Casson, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Cheryl Gallant, Laurie Hawn, Russ Hiebert and Hon. Joe McGuire.

 

Acting Members present: Omar Alghabra for John Cannis, Robert Carrier for Claude Bachand, David Christopherson for Dawn Black and Hon. Shawn Murphy for Hon. Joe McGuire.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner, Analyst; James Cox, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: LGen Michael Jeffery, (retired), former Chief of the Land Staff (2000-2003).

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on May 16, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan.
 

The witness made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 5:01 pm, the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budgets to support the Committee's travel to Petawawa, Edmonton and CFB Gagetown as part of its study of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan in the amounts of $5,731, $54,893 and $34,412 respectively be adopted and that the Chair present the said budgets to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to the motion adopted Tuesday, May 16, 2006, and in relation to its study on the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan, the Standing Committee on National Defence travel to Petawawa, Edmonton and CFB Gagetown for site visits in October and November 2006; that the travelling component of the said Committee be composed of four Conservative members, three Liberal members, two Bloc Québécois member and one NDP member; and that the necessary staff do accompany the Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, after consultation with the vice-chairs and critics, be authorized to finalize and to approve the itineraries for the Committee’s trips to Petawawa, Edmonton and CFB Gagetown.

 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk be authorized to arrange for hospitality as appropriate in Petawawa, Edmonton and CFB Gagetown, and that the total cost of such hospitality not exceed $1,800.

 

At 5:11 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
