The Standing Committee on National Defence met at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Vice-Chair, John Cannis, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Dawn Black, Robert Bouchard, Blaine Calkins, John Cannis, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Cheryl Gallant, Laurie Hawn, Russ Hiebert and Hon. Joe McGuire.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Conference of Defence Associations: LGen Richard J. Evraire, (Retired), Chairman; Col Brian S. MacDonald, (Retired), Senior Defence Analyst. Royal Military College of Canada: Dr. Sean Maloney, Associate Professor of History.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

By unanimous consent, the question: “That the Committee request that the Minister of National Defence reconsider declining the Committee's invitation to appear prior to the next meeting of NATO defence ministers' on September 28, and that the Chair write to the Minister to communicate informally the Committee's view of the importance of his appearing before the said meeting” was put and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 0.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on May 16, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan.
 

LGen Evraire and Dr. Maloney made statements and, with Col MacDonald, answered questions.

 

At 5:38 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
