The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:48 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dave Batters, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Ruby Dhalla, Steven John Fletcher, Tina Keeper, Rob Merrifield and Penny Priddy.

 

Acting Members present: Guy André for Christiane Gagnon, James Lunney for Rick Dykstra and Gary Merasty for Hon. Brenda Chamberlain.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Odette Madore, Analyst; Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute: Cora Craig, President and Chief Executive Officer. Queen's University: Ian Janssen, Assistant Professor, School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, and Department of Community Health and Epidemiology. Active Healthy Kids Canada: Mark Tremblay, Chairman of the Board.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Childhood Obesity.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Steven John Fletcher, it was agreed, — Whereas the Standing Committee on Health adopted its second report entitled Even One is Too Many: A Call for a Comprehensive Action Plan for FASD, on June 22, 2006, and planned to table it in the House of Commons before the summer adjournment, but in fact was unable to do so until September 18, 2006, and

Notwithstanding that Recommendation 2(d) in the report specifies “that Health Canada submit the action plan to Parliament to be referred to the Health Committee by October 2006”.

It is moved that the Committee agree that the date specified in Recommendation 2(d) be now considered as January 16, 2007, instead of October 2006, in order to coincide with the 120 calendar days allotted to Health Canada for the tabling of a comprehensive response, as requested in the Committee’s second report.

 

On motion of Dave Batters, it was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $82,450.00, for the period of September 21, 2006 to March 31, 2007, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

At 5:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
