The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Diane Bourgeois, Peter Goldring, Francine Lalonde, Hon. Keith Martin, Alexa McDonough, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Kevin Sorenson, Peter Van Loan and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Dean Allison for Bill Casey.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Principal.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs: John McNee, Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations. Department of National Defence: Col Denis Thompson, Director, Peacekeeping Policy; Maj Michel Lavigne, Desk Officer - Haiti, Canadian Expeditionary Forces Command.

 
Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, the Committee commenced consideration of the Order in Council appointment of John McNee to the position of Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations which was referred to the Committee on Wednesday, April 26, 2006.
 

Ambassador McNee made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:29 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:33 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on May 10, 2006, the Committee resumed a study of Canada's role in complex international interventions that involve multiple foreign policy instruments focusing on Canada's efforts in Haiti.
 

Col Denis Thompson made a statement and, with Maj Michel Lavigne, answered questions.

 

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
