The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Vice-Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: David Anderson, Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, Ken Boshcoff, Barry Devolin, Hon. Wayne Easter, Roger Gaudet, Jacques Gourde, Hon. Charles Hubbard, Larry Miller and Paul Steckle.

 

Acting Members present: Joe Preston for James Bezan.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

David Anderson moved, — That the Committee proceeds to the next order of business.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

Alex Atamanenko moved, — That the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food write a letter to the Honourable Sheila Fraser, Auditor General of Canada, indicating the Agriculture Committee’s support for a thorough investigation into the government’s conduct and spending by the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food throughout the recent Canadian Wheat Board barley marketing plebiscite.

Debate arose thereon.

 

David Anderson moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the words “Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food” the following: “and the Canadian Wheat Board”.

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of David Anderson and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

Wayne Easter moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the words “Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food” the following: “, the Prime Minister's office, the office of the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and his Parliamentary Secretary's office”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, by unanimous consent, the amendment was withdrawn.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 5:11 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:11 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

At 5:11 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study of Agricultural Policy Framework.
 

The Committee commenced consideration of a draft report.

 

At 5:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
