The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, James Bezan, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: David Anderson, Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, James Bezan, Ken Boshcoff, Barry Devolin, Hon. Wayne Easter, Roger Gaudet, Jacques Gourde, Hon. Charles Hubbard, Larry Miller and Paul Steckle.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Pork Council: Clare Schlegel, President. Canadian Pork Council Safety Net Committee: Stephen Moffett, Chair. Canadian Sheep Federation: Jennifer Fleming, Executive Director. Canadian Cattlemen's Association: Travis Toews, Director and Vice-Chair, Domestic Agricultural Policy; Ryder Lee, Policy Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study on Business Risk Management.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:04 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:07 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the Committee proceed to consideration of its future business in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee adopt the draft itinerary and budget for its travel to Truro, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Fredericton, New Brunswick; Montmagny, Québec and Stratford, Ontario from April 22 to 26, 2007 in relation to its study of the Agricultural Policy Framework and that the budget not exceed $103,015 to enable 10 members and the necessary staff to travel on this study and, that the Chair be instructed to present the budget to the Budget Sub-Committee for approval.

 

It was agreed, — That the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food be invited to appear on the Main Estimates for the year April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008 on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and that officials from the Department of Agriculture be invited to appear from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

 

It was agreed, — That officials from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency be invited to appear on the Main Estimates for the year April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008 on Thursday, May 3, 2007 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

 

At 5:19 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
