TRAN Committee Meeting

The Standing Committee on Transport met in camera at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 371 West Block, the Chair, Roger Gallaway, presiding.

It was agreed, — That, in light of the 4th option that has emerged for the disposal of the federal hopper care fleet, the committee hold two meetings to study of the issue of the disposition of the federal hopper car fleet; and that the committee write to the Minister of Transportation and advise him of this study and request that the Government await the recommendations of this committee before announcing its decision, to ensure a complete and transparent assessment of this issue.

It was agreed, — Since Transport Canada has not shown the benefit of reducing the number of flight attendants on aircraft of more than 50 passengers; Since the members of the Standing Committee on Transport have expressed major concerns about the impact on passenger safety of reducing the number of flight attendants; Given that Transport Canada is in the process of releasing the complete set of documents, in camera, that led to a definitive rejection of a similar proposal in March 2001, when the documents and explanatory notes are essential for a comprehensive review of the matter; The committee is asking the Minister of Transport for assurances that his department will not proceed with a study and implementation of new regulations that would effectively reduce the number of flight attendants on aircraft of more than 50 seats .

It was agreed, — That the Minister of Transport be invited to appear before the Committee, early after the Holidays break, to discuss the arable land Transfer issue in Mirabel.
