The Subcommittee on Solicitation Laws of the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness met in a televised session at 5:44 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D Centre Block, the Chair, John Maloney, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Paule Brunelle and John Maloney.

 

Acting Members present: Navdeep Bains for Hedy Fry.

 

Other Members present: Réal Ménard.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Laura Barnett, Analyst; Lyne Casavant, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Australian High Commission: His Excellency William Fisher, High Commissioner.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness on November 24, 2004, the Subcommittee resumed its study of Solicitation Laws.
 

His Excellency William Fisher made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 6:20 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 6:21 p.m., the Subcommittee resumed sitting in camera.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That a round table be organized on May 30, 2005, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with the following organizations and people: the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, C/Supt. Kevin Vickers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Prostitution Awareness and Action Foundation of Edmonton, Ms. Rene Ross of Stepping Stone, Ms. Maurganne Mooney of Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto, Ms. Katrina Pacey of PIVOT Legal Society, Mr. Richard Poulin of the University of Ottawa, Mr. John Lowman of Simon Fraser University, Ms. Jenn Clamen of the Coalition for the Rights of Sex Workers, Justice Canada, Ms. Janice Raymond of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women International and Ms. Frances Shaver of Concordia University.

 

It was agreed, — That the organizations and people invited to the round table of May 30, 2005, be invited to provide a written response to the questions bearing on the legislative approach to prostitution that the federal government should adopt and the social and economic reforms it should implement.

 

At 6:37 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
