The Subcommittee on the process for appointment to the Federal Judiciary of the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness met at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Richard Marceau, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Joe Comartin, Hon. Paul Harold Macklin, Richard Marceau, David J. McGuinty, Rob Moore and Vic Toews.

 

Acting Members present: Marc Lemay for Serge Ménard and Mark Warawa for Rob Moore.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Robin MacKay, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs: David Gourdeau, Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs; Margaret-Rose Jamieson, Executive Director, Judicial Appointments and Legal Counsel. Department of Justice: Judith Bellis, General Counsel, Courts and Tribunal Policy; Richard Ellis, Counsel, Judicial Affairs, Courts and Tribunal Policy; Catherine McKinnon, Counsel, Judicial Affairs, Courts and Tribunal Policy.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of June 7, 2005, the Subcommittee resumed consideration of the study on the process for appointment to the Federal Judiciary.
 

David Gourdeau made a statement and, with the other witness from the Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs, answered questions.

 

Judith Bellis made a statement and, with the other witnesses from the Department of Justice, answered questions.

 

At 5:13 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:15 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $ 38,950 be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.

 

At 5:21 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
