The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 10:03 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the chair, John Cannis, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Larry Bagnell, John Cannis, Rick Casson, Wajid Khan, Dave MacKenzie, Hon. Keith Martin, Gordon O'Connor, Gilles-A. Perron and Anthony Rota.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Betty Hinton and Lloyd St. Amand for Hon. Larry Bagnell.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michel Rossignol, Analyst. As an Individual: Joseph P. Culligan, Consultant.

 

Witnesses: Department of National Defence: BGen G.W. Nordick, Chief, Defence Intelligence. Country Indicators for Foreign Policy Project, Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University: David Carment, Professor. University of Montréal: Dr. Marie-Joëlle Zahar, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science. Royal Military College of Canada: Dr. Jane Boulden, Canada Research Chair in International Relations and Security Studies, Department of Politics and Economics.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

By unanimous consent, on motion of Gilles-A. Perron, it was agreed, — That, once BGen Ward indicates that he has no objection, the proceedings on the briefing of Afghanistan in Meeting 50 be made public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 24, 2005, the Committee resumed its review of defence policy.
 

BGen Nordick made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 11:01, Rick Casson took the Chair.

 

At 11:29 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:38 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

David Carment, Dr. Marie-Joëlle Zahar and Dr. Jane Boulden made statements and answered questions.

 

At 1:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
