The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in a televised session at 9:00 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C Centre Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Larry Bagnell, Rick Casson, Odina Desrochers, Betty Hinton, Hon. Judi Longfield, Dave MacKenzie, Hon. Keith Martin, Pat O'Brien, Gordon O'Connor and Anthony Rota.

 

Acting Members present: Navdeep Bains for Hon. Judi Longfield, Cheryl Gallant for Dave MacKenzie and Peter Stoffer for Hon. Bill Blaikie.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michel Rossignol, Analyst. As an Individual: Joseph P. Culligan, Consultant.

 

Appearing: Hon. Albina Guarnieri, Minister of Veterans Affairs.

 

Witnesses: Department of Veterans Affairs: Jack Stagg, Deputy Minister. Veterans Review and Appeal Board: Victor Marchand, Chair.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the Main Estimates 2005- 2006: Votes 1, 5, 10 and 15 under VETERANS AFFAIRS referred to the Committee on Friday, February 25, 2005.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:23 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:27 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Chair would request an in camera briefing from the Minister of Defence on technical and other information that has been expunged from the Report of the Board of Inquiry concerning the fire on HMCS Chicoutimi excepting any personal information about Lt Saunders or other injured crew members.

 

At 10:54 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
