The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in a televised session at 9:00 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C Centre Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Larry Bagnell, Hon. Bill Blaikie, Rick Casson, Betty Hinton, Dave MacKenzie, Hon. Keith Martin, Pat O'Brien, Gordon O'Connor, Gilles-A. Perron and Anthony Rota.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Rick Casson and Marc Godbout for Hon. Judi Longfield.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner, Analyst; Michel Rossignol, Analyst. As Individual: Joseph P. Culligan, Consultant.

 

Witnesses: Peter T. Kavanagh.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on October 18, 2004, the Committee resumed its study of the acquisition of submarines by the Canadian Forces.
 

The witness answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 
It was agreed, — That the Committee authorize the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs to conduct a study on the Canadian Forces Superannuation Act and other elements of the pensions and benefits package.
 

At 10:33 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:36 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
It was agreed, — That the Committee issue a public statement to express its concern over the excessive length of time it is taking to receive from the Department of National Defence the documents requested in relation to the Committee’s study on the acquisition of submarines by the Canadian Forces and the use of the cost of translating documents as a means of further delaying their distribution to the Committee, and that the statement be released to the media by 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 3, 2005.
 

At 10:57 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
