Meeting No. 62

Tuesday, November 15, 2005

The Standing Committee on Industry, Natural Resources, Science and Technology met in camera at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Marc Boulianne, Michael Chong, Paul Crête, Hon. Marlene Jennings, Brian Masse, Lynn Myers, Hon. Jerry Pickard, Werner Schmidt, Brent St. Denis and Bradley R. Trost.

Acting Members present: Hon. Claude Drouin for Hon. Denis Coderre, Hon. Claude Drouin for Hon. Jerry Pickard and James Rajotte for John Duncan.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst.

Appearing: Hon. David Emerson, Minister of Industry.

Witnesses: Department of Industry: Neil Yeates, Assistant Deputy Minister, Industry Sector.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That the Minister of Industry be invited to appear before the Committee on Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Competition Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, before Tuesday, December 1, 2005, if possible .

Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, the Committee commenced consideration of the certificate of nomination of Hugh A. Krentz to the position of member and Chairperson of the Standards Council of Canada, which was referred to the Committee on Monday, October 24, 2005.

It was agreed, — That the Committee approve the nomination of Hugh A. Krentz to the position of member and Chairperson of the Standards Council of Canada.

Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, the Committee commenced consideration of the certificate of nomination of Robert G. Van Adel to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of Atomic Energy of Canada, Limited, which was referred to the Committee on Monday, October 24, 2005.

It was agreed, — That Robert G. Van Adel be invited to appear before the Committee on Wednesday, November 16, 2005, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the purpose of reviewing his certificate of nomination to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited.

It was agreed, — That the Committee approve the list of nominees for the Expert Advisory Committee on Humanitarian Access to Pharmaceutical Products provided by the Minister of Health and the Minister of Industry in a letter addressed to the Committee on October 25, 2005, and that a letter be sent to the Ministers informing them of this decision.

At 9:54 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:00 a.m., the sitting resumed in a public televised session.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing on Sectoral Strategies.

The Minister made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:02 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
