The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:09 a.m. this day, in Room 371 West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Bonnie Brown, Colin Carrie, Jean Crowder, Nicole Demers, Ruby Dhalla, Steven John Fletcher, James Lunney, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield and Michael John Savage.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris, Analyst; Marlisa Tiedemann, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Animal Health Coalition: Matt Taylor, Executive Director; Gordon Dittberner, Director. CropLife Canada: Peter MacLeod, Executive Director; Chris Warfield, Director, Regulatory Affairs for Bayer CropScience. Infant Feeding Action Coalition: Elisabeth Sterken, National Director. The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Rob Merrifield moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, April 7, 2005, this Committee report to the House to call on the government to present a new strategy for the prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder to the Standing Committee on Health, to be developed by Health Canada and stakeholder groups, by June 2, 2005.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on division.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Monday, February 14, 2005, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-28, An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act.
 

Matt Taylor, Gordon Dittberner, Peter MacLeod and Elisabeth Sterken made statements and, with Chris Warfield, answered questions.

 

At 12:09 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:10 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Karen L. Dodds, Paul Mayers and Diane Kirkpatrick made statements and, with Claude Lesage, answered questions.

 

On motion of Réal Ménard, it was agreed, — That the Committee would proceed with the clause by clause study of Bill C-28 on Thursday, May 5, 2005; and that the deadline for submission of amendments to the Bill be set at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2005.

 

At 1:03 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
