The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in camera at 11:04 a.m. this day, in Room 536 Wellington Building, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Raynald Blais, John Cummins, Rodger Cuzner, Loyola Hearn, Randy Kamp, Gerald Keddy, Bill Matthews, Jean-Yves Roy, Scott Simms, Peter Stoffer and Tom Wappel.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Principal; François Côté, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 
It was agreed,—That six (6) members of the Committee travel to Newfoundland in September/October: the Chair, two (2) Conservative members, one (1) Liberal member, one (1) Bloc québécois member and one (1) New Democratic Party member; and that Mr. Simms and Mr. Matthews chair the hearings in their respective ridings.
 
It was agreed,—That Mr. Jim Robb be invited to comment in writing on the evidence from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans regarding the Rouge River Watershed and that the analysts prepare a précis as a briefing note for the Committee to review in September.
 
It was agreed,—That the Chair on behalf of the Committee, write a letter in response to the letter from the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, requesting copies of the consultation documents on a new Fisheries Act in general, in particular those related to the four identified issues (i.e. improving conservation tools and powers; administrative sanctions; how best to approach co-management with fishing organizations and aboriginals; and the allocation process), and including ongoing consultations over the next few months as indicated in the letter; and that the analysts prepare a précis as a briefing note for the Committee to review in September.
 

At 11:58 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
