The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in camera at 11:08 a.m. this day, in Room 536 Wellington Building, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Raynald Blais, Rodger Cuzner, Randy Kamp, Gerald Keddy, Bill Matthews, Shawn Murphy, Jean-Yves Roy, Scott Simms, Peter Stoffer and Tom Wappel.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst; Alan Nixon, Principal.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That representatives of Friends of the Rouge Watershed be invited to appear before the Committee on Thursday, April 7, 2005 regarding the Rouge River Watershed.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee request permission of the House to travel to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in the second week of May 2005 in relation to its study of the northern cod including the events leading to the collapse of the fishery and the failure of the stock to re-establish itself since the moratorium .

 

It was agreed, — That, on behalf of the Committee, the Chair be authorized to prepare a travel budget and present it to the Liaison Committee's Subcommittee on Committee Budgets.

 

It was agreed, — That representatives of the Salmonid Association of Eastern Newfoundland Inc., the LaHave River Salmon Association, The Nova Scotia Salmon Association, the Atlantic Salmon Federation and the Margaree River Salmon Association be invited to appear before the Committee regarding Atlantic salmon on Thursday, April 14, 2005; and, that not withstanding the Committee's order of Tuesday, February 15, 2005, witnesses be given a maximum of ten (10) minutes per organisation for their opening statements.

 
That Johanne Gélinas, Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, representatives of the Auditor General of Canada and officials from the Departments of Fisheries and Oceans, Environment, International Trade and Transport be invited to appear before the Committee on Tuesday, April 19 and Thursday, April 21, 2005 regarding invasive species and that the meetings be televised, if possible.
 

It was agreed, — That officials from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans be invited to appear before the Committee on Tuesday, May 3, Thursday, May 5, Tuesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 19, 2005 regarding the Main Estimates 2005-2006; and that either the meeting on May 17 or the meeting on May 19 be concentrated solely on small-craft harbours.

 

It was agreed, — That the Commitee meet on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 regarding Committee business.

 

It was agreed, — That officials from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans be invited to appear before the Committee on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 as follow-up to the Committee's study of the turbot quota of the Baffin Fisheries Coalition in the Davis Strait regarding the Department of Fisheries and Ocean's role in fishery management in Nunavut.

 

At 12:42 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
