The Standing Committee on Health met at 9:08 a.m. this day, in Room 371 West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Gilbert Barrette, Carolyn Bennett, Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, Brenda Chamberlain, Hedy Fry, Grant Hill, Karen Kraft Sloan, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield and Hélène Scherrer.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst. House of Commons: Gregory Tardi, Senior Legal Counsel.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Institutes of Health Research: Alan Bernstein, President; Guy D'Aloisio, Vice-President, Service and Operations; Mark Bisby, Vice President, Research. Department of Health: Patrick Borbey, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services Branch; Scott Broughton, Assistant Deputy Minister, Population and Public Health Branch; Diane Gorman, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Products and Food Branch; Ian C. Green, Deputy Minister; Ian Potter, Assistant Deputy Minister, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(5), the Committee commenced consideration of the Supplementary Estimates (A), 2003-2004: Votes 1a, 5a, 10a and 15a under HEALTH referred to the Committee on Tuesday, September 23, 2003.

Ian C. Green and Alan Bernstein made statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

By unanimous consent, the Chair called Votes 1a, 5a, 10a and 15a under HEALTH.

Votes 1a, 5a, 10a and 15a under HEALTH carried.

ORDERED, -- That the Chair report Votes 1a, 5a, 10a and 15a under HEALTH to the House.

 

At 10:22 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:27 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
