MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 42

Thursday, May 15, 2003

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in camera at 11:09 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Andy Burton, John Cummins, R. John Efford, Georges Farrah, Loyola Hearn, Bill Matthews, Joe Peschisolido, Carmen Provenzano, Jean-Yves Roy, Peter Stoffer, Tom Wappel, Bob Wood.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: François Côté and Alan Nixon, research officers.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on invasive species (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, January 30, 2003, Meeting No. 11).

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

It was agreed,— That the draft report, as amended, be adopted.

It was agreed,— That the report be entitled: Aquatic Invasive Species: Uninvited Guests.

 

It was agreed,— That the Chair, Clerk and researchers be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report.

 

It was agreed,— That the Chair present the report to the House.

It was agreed,— That, pursuant to Standing Order 109, the Committee request the Government table a comprehensive response to the report; however, notwithstanding the deadline of 150 days stipulated in Standing Order 109, the Committee request that the comprehensive response to this report be tabled within 90 days of the presentation of the report to the House.

It was agreed,— That the Clerk of the Committee make the necessary arrangements for a press conference to be held on May 27, 2003 after the tabling of the Committee’s report to the House and that Committee be represented by the Chair and a representative from each opposition party.

It was agreed,— That the Committee issue a news release after the tabling of the report.

It was agreed,— That the Committee’s trip to Belgium, the United Kingdom, Norway and Iceland be rescheduled until September 7 to 20, 2003.

At 12:25 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:31 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed from the previous session its study on the management the Fraser River salmon fishery (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, January 30, 2003, Meeting No. 11).

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of a draft report.

At 1:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
