Meeting No. 33

Thursday, May 29, 2003

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Gérard Binet, Mark Eyking, Rick Laliberte, John Maloney, Louis Plamondon, Bob Speller, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Member present: Murray Calder for Claude Duplain.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, analyst.

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food: Bruce Deacon, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Management Branch; Douglas Hedley, Assistant Deputy Minister, Farm Financial Programs Branch; Howard Migie, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy Branch; Michael Presley, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Market and Industry Services Branch; Paul Schubert, Assistant Deputy Minister, Communications Branch; Bruce Archibald, Assistant Deputy Minister, Research Branch; Carl Neggers, Director General, Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration; Steve Verheul, Chief Agriculture Negotiator, International Trade Policy Directorate.

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee resumed consideration of the Main Estimates 2003-2004, Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40, and Report on Plans and Priorities under AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD.

Bruce Deacon made an opening statement and, with Howard Migie, Douglas Hedley, Bruce Archibald, Michael Presley, Steve Verheul and Carl Neggers, answered questions.

The Committee considered a draft budget.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, - That the proposed operational budget of the Committee in the amount of $18,600.00 be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee resumed consideration of the Main Estimates 2003-2004, Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40, and Report on Plans and Priorities under AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD.

At 12:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
