Thursday, May 10, 2001

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 9:00 a.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Reg Alcock, Mauril Bélanger, John Cannis, Marlene Jennings, Walt Lastewka, Dan McTeague, James Rajotte, Andy Savoy, Paddy Torsney and Susan Whelan.

Acting Members present: Greg Thompson for Scott Brison and Benoît Sauvageau for Pierre Brien.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Dan Shaw, Research Officer.

Appearing: The Hon. Gilbert Normand, Secretary of State, (Science, Research and Development); The Hon. Robert Thibault, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency).

Witnesses: From the Department of Industry: Marie Tobin, Director General, Innovation Policy Branch. From the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency: Michael Horgan, President.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of the House dated February 27, 2001, Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2002, Votes 1, 5, L10, L15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115, 120 and 125, under INDUSTRY.

At 9:00 a.m., The Hon. Gilbert Normand made an opening statement and, with Marie Tobin answered questions.

At 10:05 a.m., The Hon. Robert Thibault made an opening statement and, with Michael Horgan answered questions.

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
