Meeting No. 9

Wednesday, March 14, 2001

The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Diane St-Jacques, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Jeannot Castonguay, Georges Farrah, Raymonde Folco, Monique Guay, Tony Ianno, Judi Longfield, Joe McGuire, Val Meredith, Carol Skelton, Diane St-Jacques and Alan Tonks.

Acting Member(s) present: Yvon Godin for Libby Davies.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr, Research Officer.

Witness(es): From the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union: Reg Anstey, Secretary Treasurer. From the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union - West Coast: John Radosavic, President; Bruce Loggan, Director of Benefit Funds. From the United Steelworkers of America: Gary White, Union Representative. From the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada: Brian Payne, President; Wayne Budgell, Rank and File Executive Board Member and President of Local 60-N from Newfoundland.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Tuesday, February 13, 2001, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-2, An Act to amend the Employment Insurance Act and the Employment Insurance (Fishing) Regulations (See Minutes of Proceedings, Wednesday, February 21, 2001, Meeting No. 2).

On motion by Yvon Godin, it was agreed, -- That the Assembly of First Nations be invited to appear on Bill C-2 March 20, 2001.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 5:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
