MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 41

Thursday, February 28, 2002

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Andy Burton, John Cummins, Rodger Cuzner, Wayne Easter, Georges Farrah, Loyola Hearn, Dominic LeBlanc, James Lunney, Bill Matthews, Jean-Yves Roy, Tom Wappel.

Acting Member present: Svend Robinson for Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Patrick Chamut, Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries Management; Earl Wiseman, Director General, International Affairs Directorate; Nadia Bouffard, Director, Atlantic Affairs Division, International Affairs Directorate.

On the motion of Bill Matthews, it was agreed, - That the Committee hold public hearings in Vancouver and area as soon as possible with the DFO officials responsible for managing the Fraser River fisheries, and visit potential aquaculture sites and hear evidence on the current and likely impacts of the British Columbia government’s lifting of its moratorium on the authorization of new aquaculture sites.

At 9:20 a.m., by unanimous consent, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee began its study of the implications of extending Canada's Exclusive Economic Zone to include the Nose and Tail of the Grand Banks and the Flemish Cap.

On the motion of Tom Wappel, it was agreed, - That the Chair be authorized to write to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans concerning Pacific hake, once Mr. Cummins, Mr. Lunney and the Chair have come to agreement on the text of the letter.

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
