Meeting No. 75

Tuesday, November 27, 2001

The Standing Committee on Finance met at 4:06 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sue Barnes, Maurizio Bevilacqua, Roy Cullen, Nick Discepola, Ken Epp, Albina Guarnieri, Sophia Leung, John McCallum, Shawn Murphy.

Acting Members present: Bob Speller for Gary Pillitteri, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold for Yvan Loubier.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Marc-André Pigeon, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the Department of Finance Canada: John McCallum, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance Brian Ernewein, Director, Tax Legislation Division, Tax Policy Branch; David Sénecal, Tax Policy Officer, Tax Treaties, Tax Legislation Division, Tax Policy Branch; Blair Hammond, Tax Policy Officer, Tax Treaties, Tax Legislation Division, Tax Policy Branch.

The Committee began consideration of Bill S-31, An Act to implement agreements, conventions and protocols between Canada and Slovenia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Senegal, the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic and Germany for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.

John McCallum made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

By unanimous consent, clauses 2 to 47 inclusive, carried.

By unanimous consent, schedules 1 to 8 inclusive, carried.

Clause 1 carried.

The title carried.

The Bill carried

ORDERED, -- That the Chair report the Bill to the House as soon as possible.
