Thursday, May 4, 2000

The Standing Committee on Transport met in a televised session at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Stan Keyes, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Gérard Asselin, Roy Bailey, Bill Casey, Joe Comuzzi, Bev Desjarlais, Stan Dromisky, Joe Fontana, Michel Guimond, Charles Hubbard, Ovid Jackson, Stan Keyes, Val Meredith, Lou Sekora.

Acting Member present : Raymonde Folco.

Other Member present : Dennis Gruending.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: John Christopher, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Airlines Ltd.: Paul Brotto, President. From the Air Canada: Robert A. Milton, President and Chief Executive Officer; Douglas D. Port, Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Government Relations; Lise Fournel, Executive Vice President, Commercial; Robert Peterson, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; Calin Rovinescu, Executive Vice President, Corporate Development and Strategy.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated, March 31, 2000, consideration of Bill C-26, An Act to amend the Canada Transportation Act, the Competition Act, the Competition Tribunal Act and the Air Canada Public Participation Act and to amend another Act in consequence.

Paul Brotto made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 10:20 a.m., by unanimous consent, the sitting was suspended.

At 10:31 a.m., by unanimous consent, the sitting was resumed.

Robert Milton made an opening statement and, with Lise Fournel, Robert Peterson, Doug Port and Calin Rovinescu, answered questions.

At 12:51 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
