The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in a televised session at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Peter Adams, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Diane Ablonczy, Peter Adams, Bonnie Brown, Paul Crête, Jean Dubé, Raymonde Folco, Christiane Gagnon, John Godfrey, Dale Johnston, Judi Longfield, Larry McCormick, Rey Pagtakhan, Maurice Vellacott and Bryon Wilfert.

Acting Member(s) present: Yvon Godin for Libby Davies, Stan Keyes for Andy Scott and Judy Sgro for Karen Redman.

Other Member(s) present: Carolyn Bennett, Mark Muise and Gilbert Parent.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr and Bill Young, Researchers.

Appearing: From the Department of Human Resources Development Canada: Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development.

Witness(es): From the Department of Human Resources Development Canada: Claire Morris, Deputy Minister; Susan Scotti, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Human Resources Investment Branch; David Cogliati, Director General, Central Operations, Income Security Programs.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), study on matters relating to the mandate, management and operation of the Department and, assessing initiatives aimed at the integration and equality of disabled persons in all sectors of Canadian society.

A point of order was raised by Maurice Vellacott regarding the Committee's right to request the production of papers and to ask questions to witnesses.

Hon. Jane Stewart made a statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

By unanimous consent, Dale Johnston's motion, --"That pursuant to Standing Order 108(1)(a), the papers on the transitional job fund eight column list of projects as referred to by Mr. Vellacott earlier in his testimony be produced" was withdrawn.

At 1:04 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
