Meeting No. 50

Tuesday, May 16, 2000

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in a televised session at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Yvan Bernier, John Cummins, John Duncan, Wayne Easter, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Bill Matthews, Lawrence O'Brien, Marcel Proulx, Carmen Provenzano, Lou Sekora, Paul Steckle, Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Herb Dhaliwal, Minister.

Witnesses: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Jack Stagg, Associate Deputy Minister; John Adams, Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard; John Davis, Assistant Deputy Minister, Science; Patrick Chamut, Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries Management.

Pursuant to an Order from the House of Commons dated Tuesday, February 29, 2000: Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2001 -- under Fisheries and Oceans.

The Chair called Vote 1 under FISHERIES AND OCEANS.

The Minister made a statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 4:10 p.m. the sitting was suspended.

At 4:40 the sitting resumed.

The Minister and the other witnesses answered questions.

On motion of Lawrence O'Brien, Vote 1 was carried on division.

On motion of Lawrence O'Brien, Vote 5 was carried on division.

On motion of Lawrence O'Brien, Vote 10 was carried on division.

By unanimous consent, the Chair was authorized to report the Estimates to the House.

At 5:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
