Tuesday, May 30, 2000

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:02 a.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Rick Borotsik, Murray Calder, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Dick Proctor, Rose-Marie Ur.

Other Member present: Rick Casson.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee: Susanne Hendricks, Member; Norma Burlington, Director, Advisory Committee Secretariat. From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Dr. André Gravel, Executive Vice-President; Bart Bilmer, Director, Office of Biotechnology.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and its Order of Reference dated December 15, 1999, the Committee resumed its study of mandatory labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Suzanne Hendricks and Dr. André Gravel made opening statements and with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:56 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
