Thursday, May 13, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:11 a.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Colleen Beaumier, Hon. Sheila Finestone, Bill Graham, Bernard Patry, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

Acting Member present: Deepak Obhrai for Darrel Stinson

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See the Minutes of Proceedings, of October 22, 1998, Meeting no. 73).

Ambassador Juneau made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 11:41 a.m., pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Friday, April 30, 1999, the Committee resumed its consideration of Bill S-22, An Act authorizing the United States to preclear travellers and goods in Canada for entry into the United States for the purposes of customs, immigration, public health, food inspection and plant and animal health. (See the Minutes of Proceedings, of Thursday, May 6, 1999, Meeting no. 131).

On Clause 2

Joan Bercovich and Michael A. Greene each made an opening statement.

At 10:45 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:20 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Michael A. Greene resumed making an opening statement.

Geoffrey Elliot made an opening statement and, with Michael A. Greene, Joan Bercovich and George Petsikas, answered questions.

At 12:37 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
