Meeting No. 133

Tuesday, May 11, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, John Cannis, Maud Debien, The Hon. Sheila Finestone, Bill Graham, Bernard Patry, Jerry Pickard, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Darrel Stinson, Daniel Turp.

Associate Member present: Sarmite Bulte.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Daniel Dupras; James Lee; Helgi Maki; Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers; Chris Maule, Roy Hines, Consultants.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs: John Weekes, Ambassador of Canada to the World Trade Organization. From the Canadian Airports Council: Steve Shaw, Co-Chair, Bilateral and Facilitation Committee; Gerry Bruno, Co-Chair, Bilateral and Facilitation Committee.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See the Minutes of Proceedings, of October 22, 1998, Meeting no. 73).

John Weekes made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 11:08 a.m., pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Friday, April 30, 1999, the Committee resumed its consideration of Bill S-22, An Act authorizing the United States to preclear travellers and goods in Canada for entry into the United States for the purposes of customs, immigration, public health, food inspection and plant and animal health. (See the Minutes of Proceedings, of Thursday, May 6, 1999, Meeting no. 131).

At 11:54 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
