Meeting No. 129

Tuesday, May 4, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 8:35 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, John Cannis, Maud Debien, Bill Graham, Bernard Patry, Charlie Penson, Jerry Pickard, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Daniel Turp.

Acting Members present: Murray Calder for Bob Speller; Sarmite Bulte for Colleen Beaumier; Deepak Obhrai for Bob Mills.

Associate Member present: Bill Blaikie.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz and Daniel Dupras, Research Officers.

Appearing: The Hon. Sergio Marchi, Minister for International Trade.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Robert G. Wright, Deputy Minister for International Trade; Doreen Steidle, Director General, Resource Planning and Management Bureau.

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), and the Orders of the House of February 26, 1999 and March 25, 1999, the Committee resumed its examination of the Main Estimates 1999 - 2000 and Report on Plans and Priorities for International Trade (Sessional Paper No. 8520-361-196) (See the Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, April 15, 1999, Meeting No. 114.)

The Honourable Sergio Marchi made an opening statement and, with Robert Wright and Doreen Steidle, answered questions.

At 9:53 a.m., the Committee proceeded to discuss its future business.

It was agreed, --That the Committee convene a meeting with officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs on Bill S-22, the Preclearance Act on May 6, 1999 and that further meetings be convened with witnesses, including the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Airports Council and the Air Transport Association of Canada.

It was agreed, --That the Committee convene an hour-long meeting in order to discuss its cross-country consultations during the week of April 26 to 30, 1999 in relation to its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization.

It was agreed, --That the Committee meet with Hon. Seamus Pattison, Speaker of the Irish House of Representatives on June 7, 1999.

At 10:02 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
