Thursday, April 15, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 10:18 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, John Cannis, Bill Graham, Charlie Penson, Jerry Pickard, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

Associate Members present: Sarmite Bulte.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Daniel Dupras, Gerald Schmitz and Dan Shaw, Research Officers; Chris Maule, Consultant.

Witnesses: From Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada: Cynthia Callard, Executive Director. From the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers: Wendy Ryan-Bacon, Vice-President; David Lapp, Director, Professional Affairs and Secretary. From the Industry Canada - Competition Bureau: Konrad von Finckenstein, Commissioner; Patricia Smith, Deputy Director of Investigation and Research, Economics and International Affairs Branch; Dominique R. Burlone, Acting Assistant Deputy Director of Investigation and Research, International Affairs, Economics and International Affairs Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See the Minutes of Proceedings of October 22, 1998, Meeting No. 73.)

Cynthia Callard and Wendy Ryan-Bacon each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 11:19 a.m., Konrad von Finckenstein made an opening statement and, with Patricia Smith, answered questions.

At 11:56 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
