Meeting No. 48

Thursday, February 11, 1999

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Rey Pagtakhan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Leon Benoit, Norman Doyle, Raymonde Folco, Steve Mahoney, John McKay, Grant McNally, Rey Pagtakhan and Andrew Telegdi.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the Department of Citizenship and Immigration: Gerry Van Kessel, Director General, Refugees Branch; Jeff LeBane, Director General, International Region; Rick Herringer, Director, Resettlement, Refugees Branch; Susan Burrows, Acting Director, Asylum, Refugees Branch; France Duquette, Senior Advisor, Asylum, Refugees Branch and Kent Francis, Executive Assistant to the Director General, International Region.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to convene an information meeting on countries where there are conflicts which may well cause an increase in the number of political refugees and where there are violations or possible violations of Human Rights.

On motion of Steve Mahoney it was agreed, - That in relation to its study of the Business Immigration Program, the Committee invite the following witnesses to appear before it: the Canadian Bar Association, the Organization of Professional Immigration Consultants, Don DeVortez, Professor of Economics at Simon Fraser University and Mendel Green of Green and Spiegel.

Gerry VanKessel made an opening statement and, with Jeff LeBane and Rick Herringer, answered questions.

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
