The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:06 a.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Paul Bonwick, Rick Borotsik, Murray Calder, Denis Coderre, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Ian Murray, Dick Proctor, Paul Steckle, Rose-Marie Ur.
Acting Members present: Leon Benoit for Jake Hoeppner and Pauline Picard for Odina Desrochers.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.
Witnesses: From NEXIA Biotechnologies Inc.: Jeffrey D. Turner, President and Chief Executive Officer. From the FAAR Biotechnology Group: Paul Arnison, General Manager. From Pro Gene Sys: Dr. Bill Cheliak, Managing Director.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), Examination of progress made in Biotechnology and Molecular farming and their future.
Paul Arnison, Jeffrey Turner and Bill Cheliak made opening statements and answered questions.
At 10:41 a.m., the sitting was suspended.
At 10:43 a.m., the sitting resumed.
The Committee proceeded to consider the motion on notice of Howard Hilstrom (See Minutes of Proceedings of May 6, 1999, Meeting No. 81).
-- That, this Committee direct the clerk to invite the Prairie Pasta Producers and the Minister of Natural Resources with special responsibilities for the Canadian Wheat Board to discuss the proposed pasta plant and to discuss ways to remove impediments to the plant, put in place by federal legislation.
Debate arose thereon.
Denis Coderre, seconded by Murray Calder, moved, -- That, the motion be amended by deleting the following words: "the Minister of Natural Resources with special responsibilities for "
After debate, the question was put on the amendment, and it was agreed to, on a show of hands.
The question was put on the motion as amended, and it was agreed to, on a show of hands. The motion, as amended, reads as follows:
-- That, this Committee direct the clerk to invite the Prairie Pasta Producers and the Canadian Wheat Board to discuss the proposed pasta plant and to discuss ways to remove impediments to the plant, put in place by federal legislation.
Rick Borotsik gave notice of a motion to invite the Minister of Natural Resources with special responsibilities for the Canadian Wheat Board to be considered at the next meeting.
At 11:04 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
