Meeting No. 54

Tuesday, November 3, 1998

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:03 a.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee Committee present: Hélène Alarie, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Jake Hoeppner, Larry McCormick, Dick Proctor, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Federation of Agriculture: Jack Wilkinson, President; Benoît Basillais, Policy Analyst. From the AGRICORE: Kenneth Edie, Board Member; Patty Townsend, Manager, National Affairs. From the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool: Leroy Larsen, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors; Gordon Pugh, Vice-President - Member Relation.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and its Order of Reference dated October 27, 1998, the committee undertook to study the upcoming crisis in farm incomes (See Minutes of the Committee of October 27, 1998, Meeting No. 51).

Jack Wilkinson, Kenneth Edie and Leroy Larson made opening statements and, with Gordon Pugh, Benoît Basillais and Patty Townsend answered questions.

At 11:39 a.m., Rose-Marie Ur took the Chair.

At 11:57 a.m., John Harvard assumed the Chair.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 12:38 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
