EVIDENCE

Thursday, September 27, 2012

[Recorded by Electronic Apparatus]

  (1100)

[English]

Honourable members of the committee, I see a quorum.
I must inform members that the clerk of the committee can only receive motions for the election of the chair. The clerk cannot receive other types of motions, and cannot entertain points of order or participate in debate.
We can now proceed with the election of the chair. Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the chair must be a member of the government party.
I am ready to receive motions for the election of the chair.
    Go ahead, Ms. Chow.
    I nominate Mr. Miller.
It has been moved by Ms. Chow that Mr. Miller be elected as chair of the committee.
    Are there any further motions?
I see none. Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?
    (Motion agreed to)
The Clerk: I declare the motion carried and Mr. Miller duly elected chair of the committee.
    Some hon. members: Hear, hear!
The Clerk: Before inviting Mr. Miller to take the chair, if the committee wishes, we will now proceed to the election of vice-chairs.

[Translation]

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the first vice-chair must be a member of the official opposition. I am now ready to receive motions for the first vice-chair.
Ms. Isabelle Morin (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Lachine, NDP): I nominate Ms. Chow.
The Clerk: It has been moved by Ms. Morin that Ms. Chow be elected as first vice-chair of the committee.
    Are there any further motions?
Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?
    (Motion agreed to)

[English]

I declare the motion carried and Ms. Chow duly elected first vice-chair of the committee.
    Some hon. members: Hear, hear!
The Clerk: Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the second vice-chair must be a member of an opposition party other than the official opposition.
I am now prepared to receive a motion for the second vice-chair.
    Go ahead, Mr. Holder.
It is my honour to put the Honourable Denis Coderre into the third spot.
It has been moved by Mr. Holder that Mr. Coderre be elected second vice-chair of the committee.
Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt this motion?
    (Motion agreed to)
The Clerk: I declare Mr. Coderre duly elected as second vice-chair of the committee.
    Some hon. members: Hear, hear!
The Clerk: I will now invite Mr. Miller to take the chair.
    Some hon. members: Hear, hear!
It is going to be a pleasure to work with all of you. I am very excited to be on this committee. I think you will find me very fair to all sides, but I will be strict when I have to be.
Anyway, I would suggest, and I open it up to direction from the committee, that our first order of business should be to have a steering committee. If that's okay, the clerk will send out a notice for that for next Tuesday. We'll go from there, unless I hear from you.
Is there any other business for today?
    Some hon. members: No.
The Chair: There is one item that I am going to bring up. I've been discussing with some of you that because of the change of time for this meeting—I think earlier you met at 8:45—and because of the QP practice, which affects all parties, it's going to be my practice to try to end the meetings at about 12:45. That allows everybody to get there.
With no further ado, everybody have a good weekend. We'll see you all on Tuesday.
    The meeting is adjourned.
