The Standing Committee on Health met by videoconference at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 7-52, 131 Queen St., the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Patricia Davidson, Ruby Dhalla, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Nicolas Dufour, Kirsty Duncan, Luc Malo, Cathy McLeod, Joy Smith and Tim Uppal.

 

Acting Members present: Carol Hughes for Megan Anissa Leslie, Yves Lessard for Luc Malo and Deepak Obhrai for Colin Carrie.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Stem Cell Foundation: Drew Lyall, Chair, Board of Directors. Hospital for Sick Children: Janet Rossant, Chief of Research. Stem Cell Network: Michael Rudnicki, Scientific Director. CancerCare Manitoba: Dhali Dhaliwal, President and Chief Executive Officer, Provincial Clinical Director of Oncology; Geoff Hicks, Director of Regenerative Medicine, University of Manitoba, Senior Scientist, Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology; Donna Wall, Physician, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology; Spencer Gibson, Provincial Director, Research.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, the Committee commenced its study of stem cell donation in Canada.
 

Drew Lyall, Janet Rossant, Michael Rudnicki and Dhali Dhaliwal by videoconference from Winnipeg, Manitoba made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 12:51 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:54 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed operational budget in the amount of $19,150 for the Committee's study on stem cell donation in Canada be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee's letter to the Minister of Health on the issue of rare disorders, dated October 19, 2010, be made available to the public upon request.

 

It was agreed, — That on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, the Committee meeting be devoted to the study of stem cell donation in Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That on Thursday, November 25, 2010, the Committee meeting be devoted to the consideration of the draft report on the study of the impact of microwaves on human health.

 

At 12:57 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
