The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met in a televised session at 8:45 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Lois Brown, Dona Cadman, Nicole Demers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod and Michelle Simson.

 

Acting Members present: Roger Gaudet for Luc Desnoyers, Candice Hoeppner for Lois Brown, Candice Hoeppner for Dona Cadman, Alexandra Mendes for Hon. Anita Neville and Pascal-Pierre Paillé for Luc Desnoyers.

 

Associate Members present: Candice Hoeppner.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: House of Commons: Hon. Michael Ignatieff, Etobicoke—Lakeshore. Treasury Board Secretariat: Hélène Laurendeau, Assistant Secretary, Compensation and Labour Relations Sector; Jacqueline Bogden, Executive Director, Compensation and Labour Relations Sector.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, May 5, 2010, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-471, An Act respecting the implementation of the recommendations of the Pay Equity Task Force and amending another Act in consequence.
 

The Hon. Michael Ignatieff made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 9:26 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:29 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Hélène Laurendeau made a statement and, with Jacqueline Bogden, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Nicole Demers moved, — That the Committee support all the demands of the 2010 World March of Women addressed to the Government of Canada, congratulate the organizers of this event and report back to the House.

Debate arose thereon.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the debate be now adjourned.

 

At 10:33 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:34 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That in relation to the study of Bill C-471, An Act respecting the implementation of the recommendations of the Pay Equity Task Force and amending another Act in consequence, the proposed budget in the amount of $ 4,800, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to the study of violence against Aboriginal women, the proposed budget in the amount of $110,157, for the Committee’s travel to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay, Ontario in Fall-Winter 2010-2011 be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Subcommittee on Committee Budgets of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the members of the Committee submit to the Clerk of the Committee all of their proposed amendments to Bill C-471 no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2, 2010.

 

It was agreed, — That, concerning the study of the cancellation of the mandatory long form census and its impact on women's equality in Canada, members of the Committee send to the Clerk their list of suggested witnesses by Friday, October 29, 2010, at 3:00 p.m.

 

It was agreed, — That, concerning the study of women and Canada's foreign policy, members of the Committee send to the Clerk their list of suggested witnesses by Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at 4:00 p.m.

 

It was agreed, — That, concerning the study of the effects of new technologies on women and girls, members of the Committee send to the Clerk their list of suggested witnesses by Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at 4:00 p.m.

 

At 10:46 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
