The Standing Committee on National Defence met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Rick Casson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Ray Boughen, Rick Casson, Hon. Denis Coderre, Cheryl Gallant, Laurie Hawn, Hon. Anita Neville, Pascal-Pierre Paillé, LaVar Payne and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Bonnie Crombie for Hon. Denis Coderre, Jacques Gourde for Steven Blaney, Peter Julian for Dawn Black and Jeff Watson for Laurie Hawn.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of National Defence: VAdm D. McFadden, Commander, Canada Command; RAdm R. Davidson, Director of Staff, Strategic Joint Staff.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, February 23, 2009, the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the security preparations for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
 

VAdm D. McFadden made a statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Bryon Wilfert moved, — That, in light of the recent incident of a Russian military aircraft approaching Canada’s Airspace, the Standing Committee on National Defence receive a briefing from Department of National Defence officials on: the current resources available to meet such threats, the role of NORAD, military communications between the Canadian and Russian Governments, and the detailed defence strategy to defend against similar future threats.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Claude Bachand moved, — That the motion be amended by adding, after the words “future threats” the following: “; and that the Russian Ambassador to Canada or a Russian military attaché be invited to appear before the Committee”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Claude Bachand and it was agreed to.

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

At 5:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
