The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:08 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, France Bonsant, Hon. Wayne Easter, Hon. Mark Eyking, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, Larry Miller, Blake Richards, Bev Shipley, Brian Storseth and Francis Valeriote.

 

Associate Members present: Malcolm Allen.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Mathieu Frigon, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: C.D. Howe Institute: Colin Busby, Policy Analyst. Grey, Clark, Shih and Associates Limited: Peter Clark, President. Canadian Trucking Alliance: Ron Lennox, Vice-President, Trade and Security. Railway Association of Canada: Cliff Mackay, President and Chief Executive Officer. Association of Equipment Manufacturers: Howard Mains, Canada consultant, Public Policy. Frontier Centre for Public Policy: Les Routledge. North American Equipment Dealers Association: John Schmeiser, Vice-President, Canadian Government Affairs.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of competitiveness of canadian agriculture.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the Second Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows :

Your Subcommittee met on May 26, 2009 to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendation :

That the Committee proceed with the workplan as presented for May-June 2009 in relation to its study on the competitiveness of canadian agriculture.
 

On motion of Mark Eyking, it was agreed, — That the Second Report be adopted.

 

Wayne Easter moved, — That the Committee defray the hospitality expenses related to working meals to be held during its travel to Washington D.C. from June 3 to 5, 2009.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

The witnesses made statements.

 

It was agreed, — That, notwithstanding the motion concerning the rounds of question adopted on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, questions be limited to five (5) minutes.

 

The witnesses answered questions.

 

At 1:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
