The Standing Committee on Industry, Natural Resources, Science and Technology met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Marc Boulianne, Hon. Denis Coderre, Paul Crête, John Duncan, Hon. Marlene Jennings, Brian Masse, Hon. Jerry Pickard, Werner Schmidt, Brent St. Denis and Bradley R. Trost.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Larry Bagnell for Lynn Myers and James Rajotte for Michael Chong.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Susan Baldwin, Legislative Clerk. Library of Parliament: Andrew Kitching, Analyst; Dan Shaw, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Competition Bureau: Sheridan Scott, Commissioner of Competition; Rhona Einbinder-Miller, General Counsel, Competition Law Division, Department of Justice; Brendan Ross, Senior Competition Law Officer, Fair Business Practices Branch; Suzanne Legault, Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Competition, Legislative Affairs Division; Richard Taylor, Deputy Commissioner, Civil Matters Branch.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, November 16, 2004, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Competition Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.
 

Werner Schmidt moved, — That the Committee hear further witnesses before it proceeds to the Clause-by-Clause study of Bill C-19.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Paul Crête moved, — That the Committee proceed to the Clause-by-Clause study of Bill C-19 on or before December 1, 2005, and that the Committee dispose of the Clause-by-Clause study at that meeting until completed, but no later than 11:59 p.m.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Paul Crête and it was agreed to.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the witnesses be dismissed.

 

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee Business.

 

It was agreed, — That names of additional witnesses for Bill C-19 be submitted to the Clerk by the end of the week.

 

At 4:27, the sitting was suspended.

At 4:28, the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That additional witnesses on Bill C-19 be invited for Tuesday, November 22, 2005, and Thursday, November 24, 2005.

 

At 5:08 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
