The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 11:02 a.m. this day, in Room 536 Wellington Building, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Rodger Cuzner, Randy Kamp, Bill Matthews, Shawn Murphy, Jean-Yves Roy, Scott Simms, Peter Stoffer and Tom Wappel.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Edwin R. DeBruyn, Chief, Habitat, Burlington, Area Director's Office. Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency: Louise Knox, Director. Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Pierre Lemieux, Director, Program Support and Development; Richard Wex, Director General, Habitat Management Directorate.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the Rouge River Watershed.
 

Louise Knox made a statement.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Shawn Murphy, it was agreed, — That the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans be invited to appear before the Committee on Thursday, June 16, 2005 in relation to the 2004 Fraser River sockeye salmon harvest.

 

On motion of Peter Stoffer, it was agreed, — That the Committee's order of Tuesday, May 31, 2005 regarding the meeting planned for Thursday, June 16, 2005 be rescinded, and that representatives of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. and the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board be tentatively invited to appear before the Committee if the House is sitting on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 in relation to the turbot quota of the Baffin Fisheries Coalition in the Davis Strait.

 

On motion of Peter Stoffer, it was agreed on division, — That an operational budget in the amount of $10,000 be approved for the Committee’s study of the turbot quota of the Baffin Fisheries Coalition in the Davis Strait.

 

On motion of Scott Simms, it was agreed, — That the Committee request permission of the House for six members to travel to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador from Monday, September 26 to Saturday, October 1, 2005 in relation to the Committee's study of the Northern cod including the events leading to the collapse of the fishery and the failure of the stock to re-establish itself since the moratorium .

 

On motion of Jean-Yves Roy, it was agreed, — That, on behalf of the Committee, the Chair be authorized to prepare a travel budget and present it to the Liaison Committee.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the Rouge River Watershed.
 

Richard Wex made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 12:44 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
