Monday, May 5, 2003

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Walt Lastewka, presiding.

Members of the Committee presents: Larry Bagnell, Paul Crête, Walt Lastewka, Serge Marcil, Brian Masse, James Rajotte and Brent St. Denis.

Acting Member present: Dave Chatters for Cheryl Gallant.

Other Member present: Paul Szabo.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Dan Shaw, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Department of Industry: Konrad von Finckenstein, Commissioner of Competition, Competition Bureau; Richard Taylor, Acting Deputy Commissioner of Competition, Competition Bureau, Criminal Matters Branch; Peter Sagar, Acting Deputy Commissioner of Competition, Competition Bureau, Competition Policy Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to the consideration of the possible causes of the recent increase in the price of gasoline, and the significant negative effects that the increase is having on the economy, and can recommend appropriate corrective measures to the federal government.

Konrad von Finckenstein made an opening statement and, with Richard Taylor and Peter Sagar answered questions.

At 5:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
