The Clerk of the Committee: Honourable members of the committee, I see a quorum, so we can now proceed to the election of the chair.

Are there any motions to that effect?

+-

Mr. Jeannot Castonguay (Madawaska—Restigouche, Lib.): I would like to move Bonnie Brown as chair of this committee.

+-

The Clerk: Are there any other nominations?

    (Motion agreed to)

+-

The Clerk: Madam Brown is re-elected as chair of the committee. We can now proceed to the election of the government vice-chair.

    Mr. Cuzner.

+-

Mr. Rodger Cuzner (Bras d'Or—Cape Breton, Lib.): I move Mr. Stan Dromisky for vice-chair.

+-

The Clerk: Are there any other nominations?

    (Motion agreed to)

+-

The Clerk: Now we'll call nominations for vice-chair of the opposition.

+-

Mr. Rob Merrifield (Yellowhead, Canadian Alliance): I'd like to put forward Dr. Grant Hill's name for vice-chair.

+-

The Clerk: Are there any other nominations?

+-

Ms. Hedy Fry (Vancouver Centre, Lib.): I nominate Mr. Réal Ménard.

+-

The Clerk: Are there any other nominations?

The nominations for vice-chair opposition are now closed, and since there's more than one candidate, pursuant to Standing Order 106, I am authorized to preside over the election of the vice-chair by secret ballot. My colleague and I will be standing at either end of the table; we will ask you to come forward, and we will give you a ballot, on which you will write the name of Mr. Ménard or Dr. Hill, and then come and put your ballot into the box. Afterwards my colleague and I will be counting the ballots.

and Mr. Ménard is declared elected vice-chair of the committee.

[English]

Could I have a motion to destroy the ballots?

+-

Mr. Stan Dromisky (Thunder Bay—Atikokan, Lib.): I so move.

+-

The Clerk: Madam Brown can take the chair.

-

The Chair (Ms. Bonnie Brown (Oakville, Lib.)): Thank you.

I'd like to thank the committee members for their support. I would like to congratulate the two vice-chairs, who are the same as we have had for the last year and have served us extremely well. I'd like to particularly thank those people who came out to fill the seats of usual members who couldn't be in attendance, the people from the Bloc, the Conservatives, and the NDP--that was very kind of you--and the people on my own side who came.

I would also like to welcome in a formal way new members who are on today's list, Mr. Gilbert Barrette, who is also new to the House of Commons, Dr. Grant Hill, who many of us have known for many years, but have not shared the health committee forum with, and my great friend Madam Karen Kraft Sloan, who is new to the health committee and is on this year's list.

Most of you will know we're heading out on a field trip next week. We begin on Monday morning in Vancouver. I have checked with a few people, and people seem to be arriving in Vancouver at different times on Sunday, so I'm going to suggest that each of us be on his or her own on Sunday night for dinner and that you get settled in early, because it's going to be a draining week by the time we hear witnesses and travel, the way we're going to do it. We'll try, maybe, to have dinner together on Monday night in Edmonton, but Sunday night everybody is on their own, unless you want to make individual arrangements, which is fine. If anybody who is travelling has any further questions about the trip, I would suggest that you talk to the clerk after we disband this afternoon.

Are there any questions? Everybody is happy?

Thank you very much for coming. This meeting is adjourned.
