Meeting No. 76

Monday, February 4, 2002

The Standing Committee on Finance met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Nick Discepola, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Scott Brison, Roy Cullen, Nick Discepola, Ken Epp, Albina Guarnieri, Jason Kenney, Sophia Leung, Shawn Murphy, Lorne Nystrom.

Acting Members present: André Harvey for Maurizio Bevilacqua, Paul Macklin for Sue Barnes, Stan Keyes for John McCallum, Tony Tirabassi for Gary Pillitteri and Paul Crête for Pauline Picard.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering and Marc André-Pigeon, Research Officers.

Witness: From the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency: Tara Hall, Assistant Director, Public Affairs Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Order 39(5)b), consideration of the failure of the Ministry to respond to written question No. 96 on the Order of Paper which was referred to the Committee on Monday January 28, 2002

At 3:35 p.m., the Order of the House of Commons dated January 28, 2002 being read as follows:

Pursuant to Standing Order 39(5), the failure of the Ministry to respond to the following question was deemed referred to the Standing Committee on Finance.

Q-96 — Mr. Keddy (South Shore) — With regard to audits performed by the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA): (a) how many audits are performed yearly on: (i) personal income tax returns and (ii) small business tax returns; (b) of these audits, for each of the said items, how many find money owing to CCRA as a result of the audit; (c) what percentage of these audits is appealed; and (d) what is the total number of audits performed annually by CCRA?

The Vice-Chair informed members that Question No. 96 had been responded to by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Government House Leader on Tuesday, January 29, 2002.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed --That the official from the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency be invited to respond to questions on the reasons for the delay in providing a response to Question No. 96 on the Order Paper.

Accordingly, the witness answered questions.

At 3:47 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
