Tuesday, June 6, 2000

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:10 a.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, John Harvard, Gar Knutson, Joe McGuire, Paul Steckle, Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Member present: Rick Casson for Howard Hilstrom.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses: From the Consumers' Association of Canada: Gail Lacombe, President and Chief Executive Officer; Jennifer Hillard, Vice-President, Issues and Policy. From the "Action réseau consommateur": Nathalie St-Pierre, Director general.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and its Order of Reference dated December 15, 1999, the Committee resumed the study of mandatory labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Gail Lacombe, Jennifer Hillard and Nathalie St-Pierre made opening statements and answered questions.

At 10:59 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
