Meeting No. 16

Friday, December 10, 1999

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:30 a.m., this day, at the Legion Hall, Local 228, in Airdrie, Alberta, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, John Harvard, Joe McGuire, Dick Proctor.

Other Members present: Rick Casson; Myron Thompson.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch - Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses: As Individual: Colleen Bianchi; Howard Paulson; Robert Northey; Robert Filkohazy; Hilton Pharis; Larry Van Slyke; Glenn Norman; Neil Wagstaff. From the Agricore Ltd.: Dennis Nannings, Second Vice-President; George Groeneveld, Member. From the Alberta Soft Wheat Producers Commission: Arthur E. Eckert, Chairman of Research; Edwin Bronsch, Director for Tilley, AB.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the effectiveness of long-term safety nets and other national initiatives to provide the stability and environment necessary for stable growth in the agricultural industry.

Colleen Bianchi, Robert Filkohazy, Robert Northey and Howard Paulson made opening statements and answered questions.

Glenn Norman, Hilton Pharis, Larry Van Slyke and Neil Wagstaff made opening statements and answered questions.

George Groeneveld, Dennis Nannings, Arthur E. Eckert, and Edwin Bronsch made opening statements and answered questions.

Open Microphone Session:

Dancy Davis, Director of the Alberta Cattle Commission; Jim Ness, Ken Sackett, Murray Woods, Ron Leonhardt and Ike Lanier each made a statement.

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
