Thursday, October 8, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, André Bachand, Colleen Beaumier, John Cannis, Hon. Sheila Finestone, Bill Graham, Bob Mills, Bernard Patry, Charlie Penson, Jerry Pickard, Julian Reed, Svend Robinson, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

Acting Members present: Chuck Strahl for Darrell Stinson; Monique Guay for Maud Debien.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: James Lee; Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers.

Svend Robinson, M.P. Moved, -That this Committee urge the Canadian Government to provide legal assistance to the complainants appearing before the RCMP Public Complaints Commission.

And debate arising thereon.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, -That the motion be withdrawn and replaced with the following:

Svend Robinson moved, -That this Committee urge the Canadian Government to provide legal assistance to the student complainants presently represented at the RCMP Public Complaints Commission by legal counsel Joseph Arvay and Cameron Ward, as recommended by the Commission in their letter to the Solicitor General of October 6, 1998.

And debate arising thereon.
