Meeting No. 17

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1997

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 10:48 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 308 of the West Block, the Vice-Chair, Colleen Beaumier, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, Réginald Bélair, John Cannis, Maud Debien, Gurmant Grewal, Ted McWhinney, Julian Reed, Svend Robinson, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

Other Member present: Sheila Finestone

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament
: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Laogai Research Foundation: Mr. Harry Wu, Executive Director. From the Federation for a Democratic China: Michael To, International President. From the Chinese Alliance for Democracy (U.S.A.): Frank Woo. From the Canada Tibet Committee: Jume Wangda, President and Brian J. Given. From Prison Life Media: Thomas Mann, President.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to examine the issue of human rights in China.

Mr. Michael To introduced the delegation.

Mr. Harry Wu made an opening statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

At 12:08 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
