Wednesday, May 12, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met in a televised session at 3:38 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Colleen Beaumier, John Cannis, Maud Debien, Hon. Sheila Finestone, Bill Graham, Bernard Patry, Jerry Pickard, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

Acting Member present: Deepak Obhrai for Charlie Penson.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Daniel Dupras; Peter Berg; Gerald Schmitz, Dan Shaw and Helgi Maki, Research Officers; Chris Maule and Roy Hines, Consultants.

Witnesses: As Individual: Pierre Sauvé, Fellow, Harvard Kennedy School and a non-resident fellow at the Brookings Institution; Jeffrey Schott, Senior Fellow, Institute for International Economics, Washington D.C.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See the Minutes of Proceedings, of October 22, 1998, Meeting no. 73).

Jeffrey Schott and Pierre Sauvé each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 5:13 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
