Post Covid-19 Pandemic Economic Recovery

Ottawa, November 30 2022 -

On November 30, 2022, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry and Technology (Committee) presented its Eighth Report in the House of Commons entitled Post-COVID-19 Pandemic Economic Recovery: How Can We Rebuild Better?

Members of the Committee shared their thoughts regarding the report:

‘’The economic fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic continues to pose a serious challenge to our economy, particularly to our small- and medium-sized businesses. Our economic recovery initiatives need to make us more resilient, more inclusive and help us achieve our climate objectives. I wish to thank the witnesses and members of the committee for this important study that will help us better understand the current economic situation and provide constructive recommendations to the Government.’’ Joël Lightbound, Chair of the Committee

"The Conservative Party provided a dissenting report for this study, as the recommendations outlined do not adequately address the serious challenges Canadians are facing due the rising costs of goods and services because of inflation. In our view, the recommendations in this report fail to acknowledge this reality and will not foster economic recovery or growth." Rick Perkins, Vice-Chair of the Committee

"The Bloc Québécois supports the report tabled today following the study conducted in 2021 that was brought back in 2022, but we are attaching a complementary report because we are know that more could be done. We support the transition to green energies by proposing massive investments in ecological innovation, transportation electrification, the digital revolution, as well as research and development in all regions of Quebec in order to advance a green recovery that results in prosperity supported by both Quebec entrepreneurship and the knowledge Quebec higher education institutions." Sébastien Lemire, Vice-Chair of the Committee

"The NDP are pleased to continue the dialogue for economic recovery but also stress the need for more balance and equity as we proceed." Brian Masse, Member of the Committee from the New Democratic Party

The Committee held nine meetings on this topic between April 2021 and October 2022, during which it heard from 50 witnesses and received four briefs. The report is available on the Committee’s website.
